Eugene is a film and television writer and director, best known for writing and directing the critically acclaimed Desert Bloom with Jon Voight, Ellen Barkin, and Annabeth Gish. He also wrote the screenplay for an upcoming Hallmark Hall of Fame production, The Joe Louis Story, which will be broadcast later this year. Most recently, he completed Mud City, an original screenplay, about a love affair between a white, junior college baseball coach and the young mother of his African-American, star pitcher.
Eugene’s late father, Eugene Anseim, was the head baseball coach at Contra Costa City College from the college's founding in 1951 until his retirement in 1981. As the son of a coach, Corr grew up on ball fields and in locker rooms. He went on to play third base at Merritt College in Oakland California, from 1965-66 and semi-pro baseball for the Richmond Merchants and the Walnut Creak Tiger, from 1963-1970.
Because of his background, it’s not surprising that Eugene began his career as a co-writer/director of the low-budget, independent feature, Over-Under, Sideways-Down, about a semi-pro baseball player/ factory worker dreaming of a shot at the big leagues (broadcast nationally on PBS). These experiences coupled with Eugene’s life-long avocation for minor league baseball made him the natural choice for the Ed Nottle screenwriting job.
Corr’s other screenwriting credits include: Prefontaine and Never Cry Wolf (co-writer), ABC’s Getting Out - a television adaptation of Marsh Norman's Pulitzer Prize winning play, starring Rebecca DeMornay (with writing partner, Ruth Shapiro), NBC's Shannon's Deal, and the VH1 movie, Too Legit: The MC Hammer Story (co-writer). His sole documentary, Waldo Salt: A Screenwriter's Journey, (which he also co-directed with Robert Hillman), was nominated for an Academy Award in 1991.
His film directing credits include Second Unit on Bull Durham and Cobb. He has also directed numerous episodes of television dramas, such as Crime Story, Miami Vice, and Arli$$, as well as TV movies such as Shannon's Deal (see above), Dream Street, I'll Fly Away, Against the Law, and Nothing Sacred.
Mr. Corr has three children and currently resides in Berkeley, California, with his youngest daughter.
