Rox Skipper Manages to Score Movie Deal
Carol Beggy & Mark Shanahan, The Boston Globe, 5/28/2004
Singing his praises initially, "Singing" Ed Nottle was only supposed to consult on the shoot, but when the makers of a movie about a minor-league baseball manager got a load of the Brockton Rox skipper, he became the story. Nottle talked about the prospect of seeing his name up in lights before his team's season opener yesterday. "I think it's hilarious. I've been living this story for 45 years," said Nottle, who pitched for 18 years and has managed now for 27. "But if this (movie) don't come about, I know I got another ballgame tomorrow." There's no reason to think the yet-to-be-filmed movie, called "I'm Still Standing: The True-Life Story of "Singing" Ed Nottle," won't come about. The writer, Eugene Corr, and director, Peter CB Masterson, were both at last night's game, as was Nottle's pal, Bill Murray. (The Oscar-nominated actor is a part-owner of the Rox). Asked how he met Nottle, Murray sighed. "We were both on the rebound and very tender," he said. "At the time, I was romancing Jack Morris and Ed was dating 'Oil Can' Boyd." Ok, but a biopic of Ed Nottle? "If not him, who?" Murray said in mock contempt of the question. "Who here thinks their life should be done before Ed's?" And with that, Murray gave his buddy a hug.
Ed Nottle, manager of the Brockton Rox, was hired last year as a consultant by Boston-based producer Julie Campbell for a film about a minor-league baseball manager. He did such a good job that now the film will be about his life. "I'm Still Standing: The True-Life Story of "Singing" Ed Nottle" is being produced by Campbell's independent film company in Hull. It'll be directed by Peter CB Masterson (brother of actress Mary Masterson) and written by Eugene Corr, who begins shadowing Nottle at the team's season opener in Brockton May 27. Nottle will be recognized at the event, MC'd by baseball promoter Mike Veeck, part owner of the Brockton Rox. It may be attended by actors and co-owners Bill Murray (listed in the program as the Rox official Director of Fun) and Jimmy Fallon.
